How to win people over – Learn how to win friends from Odin

Alongside being a great leader, learner, and experimenter. Odin was a great person to be friends with. He was the type you felt happy being around. Odin once attended an event he had never been to before. It was a networking event for managers from all around the country.

According to another person attending that event, Odin left the event having made everyone in that room his friend. There were around 57 people attending that event. Pretty impressive.

Everytime Odin added people to his network, he would do precise research on them. Once he knew what the other person liked and was interested in, he would learn more about that topic. Then, when Odin met with the person. He would talk about topics the other person was interested in and encourage them to talk about themselves.

Through this strategy people felt joy when meeting with Odin. Everyone else networking had one mission. To exploit the other person, to take from them. Odin chose a different route.

People can sense you are trying to take something from them. Because Odin knew being genuinely interested in the other person was the best route to take. He talked about what the other person liked and showed genuine interest in them. Additionally, in every conversation Odin encouraged the other person to talk about themselves.

It’s not always easy to listen, in fact, most people never listen in conversations. Most of the time people are getting ready to reply or are not listening at all. This causes severe miscommunication and affects relationships.

Sometimes simply listening and being genuinely interested in the other person can help you build more relationships. When you try to simply take from the other person and get them interested in you, you will have a hard time networking and making friends.

Sometimes listening is the best choice…

Book: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie (Purchase book on Amazon)

Lesson(s)

  • By becoming genuinely interested in the other side you can win them over a lot quicker.

“You can make more friends in 2 months by becoming more interested in other people then you can in 2 years by getting other people interested in you.” – Dale Carnegie

Years ago, Dale conducted a course in fiction writing at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Science. Dale and his students wanted some of the most famous artists that wrote fictional books to come to Brooklyn and give them a benefit from their experience. So they wrote to them saying how they admired their work and were deeply interested in getting their advice and learning the secrets of success.

Each of the letters were signed by about 50 to 100 people. The problem was the authors were quite busy preparing a lecture. So Dale and his students enclosed a list of questions for them to answer about themselves and their method of work. The authors liked the fact that 50-100 people showed genuine interest in their work. Who would not like it? So they left their homes and traveled to Brooklyn to give them a helping hand.

  • If you want to be a good conversationalist, be a good listener, and encourage others to talk about themselves.

Notice: All of the entities and locations mentioned in this story are fictional.
