How to get your employees to commit to your company

Audio version available:

Getting your employees to commit to the company and give their work 100 percent of their effort is quite hard. There was this guy called Ray that I knew a few years ago. Ray is quite the motivator, he has a tremendous ability in increasing productivity within companies. That is why he was/is the go-to consultant of companies.

This one time, a company was having trouble getting it’s employees to commit and give their full effort to their work. In just a year productivity decreased by 78 percent. In fact, most new initiatives management came up with turned out to be horrible failures that cost the company millions.

In order to combat the commitment problem and salvage the company, management decided to hire Ray. After being hired, Ray immediately noticed employees did not feel enough ownership over the vision of the company. Which decreased productivity levels and prevented any kind of progress.

The solution was hidden in incremental changes. Ray did the following things to combat this issue.

  1. Established a sense of purpose by giving the essential employees (i.e managers) shares in the company. When leaders feel like they have a share in the vision, they push their teams to do better.
  1. Setup rewards for being a leader and innovator. By giving bonuses to employees that searched for new opportunities and became leaders, Ray was able to create a culture of leadership and innovation.
  1. Changed simple phrases like “shareholder” to “shareowner” to give employees and investors a sense of ownership over the company and the vision.

The company thrived after these changes and a brand new company culture was established. Using Ray’s strategy for combating these problems could be beneficial to any company experiencing commitment / productivity problems.
