As a negotiator, it is imperative to influence the terms in a negotiation. People that influence the terms of negotiations have control over the outcome of the negotiation. An outcome that may not be in your best interest. 

A friend of mine who we shall refer to as Wendy had a great trick for controlling the outcome of negotiations. She would insist on being the one taking all of the notes in the negotiation. Since taking notes required lots of focus and attention, most people never bothered disputing who took notes. Little did they know, being the one taking notes can help you determine the outcome of the negotiation. 

Since the person taking notes writes down everything agreed on by both sides, they can leave out certain parts or alter what is written to create an outcome that works in their best interest. Note takers also have the perk of being able to understand both sides better.

Wendy was able to dictate the whole negotiation by being the one taking all of the notes.
